It was mine to lose and I did

The third season of the R&D Poker League is over and I finished second overall. I should be happy, but all I can think of is that I went into the final game with a 2 point lead, seriously duffed 2 hands, and finished 1 point away from a playoff for first. In both cases I should have gone all in.

Hays was unstoppable on the all-ins today and took out all but two players. When it was my turn I watched my forced in pocket 3s turn into a straight then lose to a flush. Things went a lot better when, as with season 2, I had to play a second heads up game with a tied player for final position.

The next season begins in September. I doubt this time we can count on Roger missing two games for double zeros.

Penn Jillette at This I Believe, Inc.

Maybe I'm biased because I admire that giant entertainer so much. Still, I think it's a good read.

Believing there is no God means the suffering I've seen in my family, and indeed all the suffering in the world, isn't caused by an omniscient, omnipresent, omnipotent force that isn't bothered to help or is just testing us, but rather something we all may be able to help others with in the future. No God means the possibility of less suffering in the future.

W12 Golf

In May VW unveiled a Golf concept with a 12 cylinder engine. The rear/mid mounted engine is twin turbocharged and generates 650hp. A couple notes:

  • Claimed top speed of 325 km/h
  • And 0-100 km/h (62 mph) of 3.7 seconds
  • 2 seater
  • Retains the production car's doors, hood and lights
  • Instead of spolier, carbon-fiber roof designed to work as massive diffuser
  • The Golf is the second largest-selling vehicle in the world, trailing only the Toyota Corolla
  • In June VW built the 25-millionth Golf
